IRBr Prep Course

The IRBr Prep Course – English Section prepares students for the selection process of the Rio Branco Institute (IRBr). As the tests of the English language can be found in two phases of the selection process (in the first phase – TPS; in the third phase – written exam), candidates must be competent in the areas of reading, comprehension and interpretation of texts as well as in their abilities to formulate essays, summaries, and translations (Portuguese to English and English to Portuguese). In this light, the IRBr Prep Course has the objective of unifying all these abilities in one single English class.

Using the most modern and up-to-date international journalistic materials, from sources such as The Economist, Newsweek, Time, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, among others, as well as from Brazilian journalism, from sources such as Folha de São Paulo, O Estado de Minas, Carta Capital, Isto É, Veja, Exame, among other academic texts from Darcy Ribeiro, Gilberto Freire, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Machado de Assis, Luiz Fernando Veríssimo, Roberto Schwartz, Antônio Cândido, this course seeks to debate current events commonly found in the world of diplomacy and international policy. Within topics such as Environmental Protection, The Oil War, War and Terrorism, Sustainable Development, AIDS and Human Health, Human Rights, Technology, among others, this course focuses on the areas of vocabulary and grammar found in the chosen texts to formulate strategies referent to the writing of summaries, translations, and essays. The unification of all parts referent to the English exams helps students to develop the abilities necessary to pass the selection process as well as to act in international diplomacy situations.

This course can also be taken as a Distance Learning Course via Internet in the course IRBr Distance Learning Course.

This course is recommended for students with an advanced level of English, preferably those who already possess the Michigan Proficiency or the Cambridge CAE or CPE. See also Rio Branco Instituto (IRBr) – Selection Process
